Business on a Budget... with a side of splurge.

1. Forever 21 Dress; 2. Kenneth Cole Reaction Flat; 3. Kenneth Jay Lane Necklace
The Work Wear Wardrobe is a vital investment for young professionals: it defines who we are in the moment and who we hope to be in the future. It’s a necessary expenditure and when shopping for a plus size body it is often a very large (no pun intended) expense as structured clothing (you know, the kind of clothing that is cut and designed for hips, shoulders, and busts) is difficult to find at a lower price.

Over the past 5 years of my career I’ve come up with a few style doctrines that help guide my working wear purchases: 1. Dresses and skirts are easier than pants (pants are not easy to fit when you’ve got a long inseam, a high waste, and big hips—dresses don’t require all that detail to shape and structure and therefore, are easier to look amazing in and feel confident wearing); 2. Multipurpose pieces are favorable (blouses that can be layered with sweaters and work with a skirt or that awesome pair of perfect-fitting pants found on a sale rack); 3. Bold color can lift the Monday blues—fact.

With all this in mind, I adore Forever 21’s black shirt dress. The pop of red gives ample room for color play, the long sleeves cover all the wobbly bits and the banded waist will do wonders defining the midsection and creating great shape. Did I mention it’s only $24.80?!  The Kenneth Cole Reaction red patent flats will give you miles of wear in total comfort. From festive parties to Saturday morning errands, the deep red will add a quiet sophistication to any look. And while we are on the topic of sophistication, isn’t that Kenneth Jay Lane necklace flawless? It’s not a budget item (insert sad face here), but it is a piece that will illuminate your face with reflective light play, go with just about anything, and become a staple in your accessories stash.
